2021 Potato Harvest is in full swing!

2021 Potato Harvest

Skagit Farmers Supply helps to support thousands of acres of potato production in Western Washington!

Whatcom County, a designated seed growing region, grows 3000 acres of seed potatoes annually. With hundreds of varieties across multiple generations seed potato production in a very intensive practice. All these seed potato lots are state certified and inspected for virus and disease. Once harvested the seed potato crop is shipped all over the west coast being planted from California to Colorado. Harvest began in Whatcom county the last week of August, and growers hope to have their potatoes in storage before the month of September comes to an end.

Skagit County produces nearly 15,000 acres of potatoes annually, focusing on thin skinned fresh market varieties. Setting themselves apart from other regions, growers have focused on producing red, white and yellow potatoes, with small acres of fingerlings, purples, and baby potatoes in the mix as well. Our high organic matter soil and progressive growers have created a market built around very dark red skinned potatoes that are hard to match in any other growing region. With an average yield of 400-500 cwt/ac (40,000-50,000 lbs.) the Skagit valley will produce nearly 6 million cwt of potatoes this season. For most growers harvest has just begun and can run into October-November based on the weather and their sales.
