In its natural state, propane is an odorless and colorless gas that is widely used to fuel appliances for heating, cooking, and other uses. While propane is used as a gas for fueling appliances, it is transported and stored as a liquid under high pressure in specially designed containers referred to either as tanks or cylinders. When liquid propane changes into a gas vapor, it expands in volume by about 270 times, meaning that propane is very economical to store and transport as a liquid rather than as a gas vapor. However, this characteristic also means that even a small leak of liquid propane can result in a much larger quantity of propane vapor, which can be especially dangerous in a confined space.
Similar to any other flammable gas or flammable liquid, propane is very safe when stored and handled properly. However, if propane is not properly and safely stored and handled, it can cause property damage, injuries, or even death. For this reason, it is important for the safety of the members of your household that they have a thorough understanding of the properties and characteristics of propane, and the hazards and risks associated with its use. Contact us with questions that you have about propane.
The propane system at your home or business should be installed, maintained and repaired only by qualified personnel. Call a qualified service technician to light or re-light pilot lights on your appliances.

“Hi again; your service is AMAZING! I called to check when we’d get filled with the upcoming weather mass. Was told next week – filled the next day! We are such happy customers, and so pleased with your service and staff. … You always exceed expectations.”
“Thank you all for such awesome services! You all rock!”
– Holly & Jim Norton
“What a BIG blessing you are!! Thanks for the propane delivery today. Much appreciated!!!”
– Margaret Hansen
“Thank you! I greatly appreciate your responsiveness and delivery service earlier this year when we had additional snow and unusually low temperatures. The low temperatures prompted much higher than normal propane usage (no heat pumps in those low temps) and our driveway can be difficult to navigate when there is an accumulation of snow. Your employees in the office and the drivers were extremely helpful and relieved the anxiety I felt while wondering if my propane would hold out. Great service!”
– Anne Sanders
“Dear Carl-
I have been a Skagit customer since I moved to Whidbey and started using propane (2001/2002 timeframe).
I am a single, 74-year-old really healthy woman. … However, in February this year, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and have spent the past 6 month undergoing surgery, treatment, etc., driving myself into Seattle.
I live [in a home] with a side yard that’s always been difficult, going along the hedge of bushes to reach the side of the house. I have not been on top of my pruning, able to do a few hours a week, but not enough.
During your last delivery, I heard your truck, ran out and asked if you could get through because the blackberry vines had grown since my last pruning. You said yes, you had a pair of pruners and were cutting the vines.
I was running out the door to catch the ferry to Seattle for my daily radiation treatment.
I can’t tell you how much your attitude and the helpfulness meant to me that morning. … I want you to know that I will always remember your kindness that morning. Radiation is tough, for me it was 5 days a week for 5 weeks, and takes weeks/months to recover.
Again, thank you so very, very much!”
– Cathie H.
“We wanted to thank Skagit Farmers Supply, and especially our driver Stan, who went above and beyond making our delivery in deep snow and ice. Without that delivery, we would have run out of propane.”
– Pat & Barb
“… Our driveway is very steep and narrow with two cement tracks down it through the trees, and no turn around at the bottom. … Our winter has been cold and wet, so the ground was very soft from all the rain and we have been using more propane than normal. On this day, I parked my car on the tracks in front of the house, so it was blocking access for the propane delivery. It wasn’t visible from the top of the driveway … because my car was in the way, [propane delivery driver] Johnathan’s tire got off the track. After filling our tanks, the truck didn’t have enough traction in the soft dirt to make it back onto the tracks.
Johnathan was very kind and got to work on the problem and in a few minutes, he chained up and was able to get back onto the tracks and out of the driveway. He went above and beyond the norm to make sure we were warm and comfortable, and we appreciate his heroic effort. You should be proud to have such a fine person representing you.”
– John & Carrole Strain
“My husband and I moved to Whidbey in 2017 … In November 2017, the day before Thanksgiving, our moving van arrived at our forever home in Useless Bay. We learned that the propane tank was down to 5 percent. Upon calling around, most of the propane companies shared they wouldn’t be able to deliver until after the holiday.
At. 4 p.m. the same day, a Skagit Farmer Supply truck pulled up to our house to fill our propane tank. They had deployed a special delivery driver to our house, as they didn’t want us to be without heat over the Thanksgiving holiday. This is when I coined the term, “Whidbey Wonderful.”
Lauren Corson; Letter to the Editor in the South Whidbey Recorder
“Good Morning. I am going to join your Co-op for home propane delivery. After much searching, and talking with friends and neighbors [about] your company, its employees, history and pricing tell me this is where I need to be. … I saw your driver yesterday in Freeland [while] he was fueling up his truck. He was very beneficial in my decision to switch my service to the Co-op.”
